A Message from Mayor Adam Wingate – Honoring Our Veterans

Leadership Messages

Dear Fellow Resident,

Each year on November 11, our nation pauses to honor the brave men and women who have served and sacrificed for the freedoms we hold dear. Here in Harrison Township, we proudly join communities across America in expressing our gratitude to all veterans, past and present, who have answered the call of duty.

The tradition of setting aside this day of remembrance dates back to 1919, when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I. In his words, “On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we will remember them.” Decades later, following the service and sacrifice of those who fought in World War II and Korea, Congress renamed the observance Veterans Day, a day to honor all who have worn our nation’s uniform in defense of liberty.

Today, Veterans Day remains a time to reflect on the courage, dedication, and selflessness of those who protect our country, and to remember the families who stand beside them. Their service ensures that the ideals of freedom, democracy, and unity continue to define the American spirit.

As a community, we are proud to provide a lasting way to honor a veteran. The Harrison Township Veterans Memorial, located at the entrance of the William Wilt Soccer Complex, features Hero Lane – a brick walkway lined with engraved pavers commemorating the service of our nation’s heroes. You can purchase a paver to honor a veteran by completing this form and returning it to the Township Clerk’s Office at the Municipal Building.

On behalf of our entire community, I extend heartfelt thanks to every veteran for your courage, your commitment, and your enduring service to our country.

With gratitude,
Adam Wingate
Mayor, Harrison Township
