Dear Fellow Resident,
October is Fire Prevention Month, a time when communities across the nation focus on one simple but powerful message: preventing fires saves lives.
As a proud Harrison Township volunteer firefighter for nearly 15 years, I’ve had the honor of serving our community. In my current role as a Captain, I especially enjoy visiting our local schools during Fire Prevention Week. Alongside our dedicated Fire District team, we engage students in fun, interactive demonstrations, including learning to “stop, drop, and roll,” crawling under simulated smoke, and teaching how and when to call 911. Children also get to explore our fire trucks, see our gear up close, and receive take-home safety checklists and activities to share with their families. It’s one of the most fulfilling parts of my service, helping young people learn, ask questions, and see firefighters as both protectors and neighbors.
Over the years, I’ve witnessed firsthand the devastation a fire can bring. Those experiences deepen my resolve, and that of our entire department, to focus not only on emergency response but also on prevention, education, and preparedness. Every conversation, classroom visit, and safety inspection is another opportunity to protect lives and property.
I encourage every household in Harrison Township to take a few simple but vital steps this month:
- Review your family’s fire safety plan
- Test your smoke detectors
- Practice a home escape drill
These small actions can make all the difference when seconds matter.
Our Fire District is always here as a resource, and I invite families to connect with us—whether it’s to learn more about fire prevention, schedule a safety visit, or simply meet the firefighters who proudly serve you.
Together, through fire prevention, awareness, preparation, and community, we can keep Harrison Township safe.
With Gratitude and Commitment,
Lawrence Moore
