A Message From Committeeman TJ Coakley – Introducing the Economic Development Committee

Leadership Messages

Dear Fellow Resident,

I’m excited to announce the formation of the Harrison Township Economic Development Committee (EDC). The EDC’s mission is to evaluate our town’s business environment and identify opportunities for growth and improvement. We are committed to supporting businesses looking to establish themselves in our town and serve our residents.

Starting a business is no small task, it’s time-consuming and often complex. There are numerous regulations, legal steps, and township processes involved, and missteps early on can be costly. That’s why a cornerstone of the EDC’s support will be what we call the “Navigator Role.” We aim to be a resource and guide for prospective and new businesses, helping them understand the process and avoid unnecessary setbacks. To further advance our mission, the EDC will collaborate with partners such as the Gloucester County Chamber of Commerce, the Mullica Hill Business Association, and other relevant business development organizations.

It’s important to clarify that the EDC will not have the authority to engage with developers proposing new housing developments, commercial centers, or warehouse projects. That is not the committee’s role. Instead, our focus is squarely on small businesses and the thoughtful use, or reuse, of existing commercial and mixed-use properties throughout the township.

In the coming weeks, we’ll begin recruiting committee members and drafting recommendations focused on business recruitment, support programs, and potential community projects. If you’re interested in learning more about the EDC or serving on the committee, I invite you to contact me directly at tcoakley@harrisontwp.us.

As a 25-year resident of Mullica Hill, a Main Street business owner, and a former board member of the Mullica Hill Business Association, I’ve long been an advocate for the economic vitality of our community. I’m grateful to Mayor Wingate and my fellow committee members for their vision, support, and shared belief that a strategic approach to economic development will benefit our residents. The formation of the EDC is a natural next step in that ongoing commitment. I’m honored to lead this initiative and look forward to the positive impact it will bring.

Sincerely,
TJ Coakley
Committeeman
