Dear Fellow Residents,

On Tuesday we celebrate our nation’s independence for the 247th time. I’m sure many of our residents are planning their trips to the shore or backyard BBQs with family and friends and of course where to watch the fireworks. Washington Township and Woodbury are a couple of suggestions that are nearby.

The Fourth of July celebrates the birth of our nation, in recognition of the declaration of a free society, where the people have the final say. This declaration was made by our founding fathers who had everything to lose but were committed to the interest of the masses. The brilliance and sacrifice of these individuals are the basis for the dream we call America. Though imperfect, it has continued to endure many challenges by constantly evolving.

July 4th is a day to reflect on the action of the 56 signers of that document and honor their promise to “pledge their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor” to something bigger than themselves. A commitment to the simple concept that we are all “endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”. This remains an internal challenge today for our nation.

On behalf of our Harrison Township department heads and team members and my fellow Township Committee members, Deputy Mayor Julie DeLaurentis, Committeewoman Michelle Powell, Committeemen Jeff Jacques, and Lawrence Moore, I wish you and your families a safe and happy Fourth of July holiday.

Together for Harrison Township,
Lou Manzo
Your Mayor
