Gino Giumarello of Mullica Hill’s award-winning In the Village Salon shares expert tips on summer hair highlights.
Summer brings a unique beauty, with the sun accentuating your skin color (use a minimum SPF 30 sunscreen) and naturally lightening your hair. To enhance this seasonal glow, it’s the perfect time to experiment with hair highlights. Highlights are the additional lightening of your hair that mimics the natural effects of the sun. This look is particularly attractive in the summer as the highlights reflect the sunlight, adding dimension and depth to your hair, making it look fuller and more youthful.
Selecting the right color is crucial for achieving a natural appearance. Browsing the internet or looking through magazines can help identify a variety of styles and colors. I often encourage our guests to bring us magazine pages or screenshots for inspiration of the look they want to achieve. Just remember that when determining the best shade for you, consider your natural hair color and skin tone.
In addition to color and style, there are also various highlighting options to consider, including:
- Balayage: A freehand technique where highlights are painted onto the hair for a natural, sun-kissed effect.
- Foil Highlights: Traditional highlights using foils to isolate the hair sections being lightened.
- Babylights: Very fine, subtle highlights that blend seamlessly with your base color.
- Ombre: A gradient effect where the hair transitions from a darker shade at the roots to a lighter shade at the ends.
Each method offers a different look, and the choice depends on your personal style and the results you wish to achieve.
As you can see, there are some decisions to be made when highlighting your hair. But don’t let the process overwhelm you. The right stylist will help guide you to the perfect highlights. A skilled professional can provide a consultation to recommend the best options based on your natural hair color, skin tone, and desired look. They can also advise on the right home care and products for maintaining your highlights and ensuring your hair remains healthy.
