When meeting lifelong Jersey Girl, Dr. Jessica Bowen, one can’t help but notice her infectious smile. It’s no surprise to learn that she’s an orthodontist and the founder of Bowen Family Orthodontics, right here in Mullica Hill.
Jessica grew up in Cherry Hill with two older brothers, so you know she’s no pushover. She was an excellent student, and in high school, she discovered her passion for science. And as fate would have it, Jessica worked for her orthodontist after school. Ironically, she was terrified of doctors.
She recalls, “I was so scared of going to the doctor, dentist, and orthodontist, I would scream and just generally act terrible!”
After high school, Jessica attended The College of New Jersey, graduating Magna Cum Laude. She pursued her dental education at the prestigious University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, followed by the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine, where she earned her Certificate in Orthodontics and Master of Dental Science. Her professional career began as an Orthodontic Associate, where she took on leadership and operational roles at each practice she worked. She soon had a burgeoning dream of starting her own practice.
In 2019, Dr. Bowen found the perfect location in Mullica Hill. Perhaps influenced by her childhood fears, she had a clear vision for her practice. She wanted to create a warm and welcoming space and prioritize patient comfort and convenience. So, TVs were mounted above all treatment chairs, modern communication would be utilized, such as texting, and she’d offer virtual appointments. Dr. Bowen also embraced the latest technologies, installing digital X-rays and scanners that create 3D models of patients’ teeth, eliminating those uncomfortable ooey-gooey impressions.
Bowen Family Orthodontics opened its doors in February 2020, just weeks before the pandemic shutdown. With true Jersey grit, Dr. Bowen refused to be deterred by the unprecedented challenge. She initiated her unique patient-centric care, blending high-tech and personal connection with each patient and their family to craft a customized treatment plan. It was working! In just a few short years, Dr. Jess, affectionately known by her patients, has been honored as a South Jersey Magazine Top Doc in 2022 and again in 2023.
Reflecting on her work, Dr. Bowen shares, “It is so rewarding to look back at photos from my patients’ first visit to the day they get their braces off. Our young patients’ confidence blooms, and for adult patients who were once self-conscious about their teeth, it’s transformative….I love changing people’s lives!”
Dr. Bowen not only found professional success in Mullica Hill, she also fell in love with our community. Last year, Jessica and her husband, Peter (a Radnor, PA native), whom she affectionately jokes about “Jersey-fying”, moved from Marlton to the Hill with their children, 6-year-old daughter Brielle and 4-year-old son, Carter. Brielle attends kindergarten at Harrison Elementary and plays in our youth soccer league, and Carter is a huge fan of superheroes and Star Wars. The Bowen family enjoy summer weekends in Sea Isle, where Peter’s parents have a home. And as if this story didn’t have enough “Jersey,” the couple first met and later got engaged at the shore.
We’re fortunate to have Jessica Bowen as part of our community; she has embraced the Harrison Strong spirit. Jessica is active in our Rotary as the Social Media Chair and serves as the Secretary of the Mullica Hill Business Association. She is a member of the Gloucester County Vixens, a local Dragon Boat team of over 100 women who annually support a local charity through various fundraisers.
