Neighborhood Nukes: A Presentation on New Jersey’s Cold War Nike Missile Program
September 4 @ 6:30 pm
In 2016, landscape photographer Richard Lewis discovered that the long-abandoned Lumberton, New Jersey Nike Missile battery was set to be demolished. Recognizing its historical significance, he photographed the site before it was lost forever. His work garnered attention from veterans and historians alike, leading him to document other abandoned Nike Missile sites across New Jersey. Richard’s journey uncovered the secrets of the Cold War era, including what lay hidden beneath these missile batteries.
Now, through his presentation “Neighborhood Nukes: New Jersey’s Cold War Nike Missile Program,” Richard shares these forgotten pieces of history, offering insights into a time when America faced unprecedented threats. This program is made possible by funds from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities.
