Hessians – Germans in the American Revolution

Explore a lesser-known perspective of the American Revolution in a presentation by Dr. Friederike Baer, professor of history at Pennsylvania State University, discussing the experiences of German-speaking people during the war and her book Hessians: German Soldiers in the American Revolutionary War.
The program will examine the role of the Hessians, German troops hired by the British to fight during the Revolution, while also exploring the broader experiences, loyalties, and challenges faced by German-speaking communities in colonial America during the conflict.
Dr. Baer is the author of Hessians: German Soldiers in the American Revolutionary War, a historical study examining the lives of approximately 30,000 German soldiers who fought in North America during the Revolutionary War.
This program is supported by the New Jersey State Library and the REV250 Grant as part of ongoing efforts commemorating America’s 250th anniversary.
