A Message From Mayor Wingate – Hanukkah Wishes!

Leadership Messages

Dear Neighbor,

At sundown this Sunday, members of the Jewish faith in our community and around the world will gather with family and friends to celebrate Hanukkah.

Also known as the Festival of Lights, Hanukkah commemorates a remarkable miracle. The story begins around 200 B.C., when Judaism was outlawed and soldiers descended upon Jerusalem, destroying the holy Temple. In 168 B.C., the Jewish people rose up against this persecution, successfully expelled the monarchy, and restored the Temple, including its Eternal Light, meant to burn continuously. Although they had only enough oil for a single day, the flame miraculously burned for eight days, lasting long enough for more oil to be prepared.

During Hanukkah, families retell this story as they light the menorah, a candelabrum representing the eight-day miracle. The celebration also includes cherished traditions such as sharing festive treats, playing games, and exchanging gifts with friends and loved ones.

On behalf of my fellow committee members, Deputy Mayor Lawrence Moore and Committeemen Jeff Jacques, Kevin French, and TJ Coakley, I wish all who celebrate, a Happy Hanukkah filled with peace and joy.

Sincerely,
Adam Wingate

Mayor, Harrison Township
