Happening in the Hill loves highlighting the incredible individuals who make our community shine. We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Jessica Bowen, a proud Hill resident and Top-Doc orthodontist behind Bowen Family Orthodontics—to ask her ten quick questions about her life, work, and everything in between.
What inspired you to become an orthodontist?
Dr. Bowen: It’s a bit ironic because as a kid, I was terrified of doctors and dentists! But working for my orthodontist in high school made me realize how transformative orthodontic care can be. I loved seeing patients gain confidence, and I knew I wanted to be part of that journey.
What was the biggest challenge in starting your own practice?
Dr. Bowen: Opening just weeks before the pandemic was definitely not in my business plan! But I was determined to provide high-quality, personalized care, even in uncertain times. Thanks to technology and an amazing community, we made it through stronger than ever.
What sets Bowen Family Orthodontics apart from other practices?
Dr. Bowen: We focus on patient comfort and convenience. From TVs above every treatment chair to virtual appointments and digital impressions, we use the latest technology to make the experience as easy as possible. I’m also the only orthodontist in Mullica Hill who’s also a mom, so I truly understand how hectic schedules can be for moms and their families. We try to do whatever we can to make the process stress free.
What do you love most about your job?
Dr. Bowen: The transformations! Seeing a patient’s confidence grow as their smile improves is the most rewarding feeling.
How do you balance being a business owner and a mom?
Dr. Bowen: It’s a juggling act! But I have an incredible support system—my husband, Peter, and my kids, Brielle and Carter, keep me grounded. Plus, I make sure to be present in both roles, whether it’s at the office or on the soccer field.
What is a fun fact about you?
Dr. Bowen: I’m a huge Disney fan! I go as often as I can, and I love the magic, nostalgia, and fun that Disney brings. It’s my happy place!
What’s your favorite way to unwind?
Dr. Bowen: Summer weekends in Sea Isle with my family. There’s nothing like the Jersey Shore to relax and recharge.
You’re involved in a lot of community organizations, why is that important to you?
Dr. Bowen: Mullica Hill welcomed my family with open arms, and I love giving back. Being part of the Rotary, Business Association, and Vixens Dragon Boat team allows me to support our community in different ways.
Any advice for young professionals looking to start their own business?
Dr. Bowen: Believe in your vision, be adaptable, and surround yourself with people who uplift you. Challenges will come, but persistence pays off.
If you weren’t an orthodontist, what would you be?
Dr. Bowen: Probably a teacher. I love educating my patients about their treatment, and I think I’d enjoy doing that in a classroom setting too.
